Cumann na mBunscol Final 2022
Well done to our school football panel who qualified for the Cumann na mBunscol final on Wednesday 18th May. The final took place in Bord na Móna, O'Connor Park, Tullamore. Unfortunately, despite playing very well, we lost out to Gaelscoil Eadan Doire in a very close match. Thanks very much to Ms. Dunne, Mr. Carroll and Sadie for helping with the football this year. Big thank you also to Walsh Island GAA for treating the panel to Burger King after the match.

On Friday 6th May 5th and 6th Class attended the Offaly County Council Vex Robotics day in O'Connor Park, Tullamore. They had a brilliant day and did really well in the competitions. It was a very wet day but they didn't let the weather take away from their enjoyment of the day.

Return to School
Dear Parents,
Please find all relevant information regarding return to school on the Policies Page.
As I have already informed you Infants to 2nd Class will return on Monday next 1st March. I have attached some temporary arrangements for this time.
I would also ask that you complete the return to school/educational facility declaration form and return by email to your child's class teacher by Sunday 28th February. It is essential that we get this form back before your child returns to school Monday.
There is no need for children in other classes to complete this form at present as it is not appropriate to fill them in this far in advance of return to school.
Parents are also asked to send this form back to the school following any absence by their child from school.
Arrangements in school will remain mainly unchanged from those that were in place before Christmas. Any changes that will be in place can be found in the updated Plan for reopening which is attached.
Once more information is available regarding the return to school of Senior pupils I will contact you again and remind parents of those pupils to return the declaration form. These documents will also be available on the school website.
Looking forward to meeting Infants to 2nd Class on Monday.
Kind regards,
Caitriona

All staff have received training around Covid-19.
Below is our logistics plan as to how school will operate when we re open.
We ask for your co operation so that as a community we can help our children return to school safely.
Thanks and looking forward to working safely together.

Reminder to anyone attending school who has travelled abroad:
- Government policy, which is based on official public health advice, continues to advise against non-essential travel overseas for everyone.

- Restricting your movements means staying indoors in one location and avoiding contact with other people and social situations as much as possible.

- As per text message, can parents please update contact details for both parents and emergency contacts.
- We also need an email address for all parents for contact purposes and for use should we need to go back to distance learning.

End of School Year 2019/2020
Hello to children, parents and families of Walsh Island N.S,
We are reaching the end of one of our most unusual and challenging years. Little did we think as we started last September that we would end the year with distance learning and social distancing from all whom we care for. I wish to thank and applaud you all for your co- operation and thank all the staff who have worked so diligently with you all year but particularly since Mar 12th.
I wish our departing 6th class the best of luck in their future and as I say each year they are always welcome back We have enjoyed teaching them for the last eight years and we know they all have bright futures ahead of them. We hope to organise a small end of year ceremony for them.
To all our other students we wish you a safe and happy holiday and really look forward to seeing you again in September. Book lists for next year will be posted with your child’s report. The book lists and school calendar will also be posted on the school’s website.
Teachers will remain with the class grouping they had last year. Ms. Delaney will return to the infants and Ms. Garry and myself will work in Special Education.
We are awaiting advice and guidance on the return to school in September, from the Dept of Education and the diocese. When we receive this, we will be in contact with you to outline how these guidelines will affect your child's return to school.
Finally, I wish to thank the staff, teachers, SNAs cleaner and secretary for their support and tremendous work during the past year. We welcome back Ms. Delaney and Ms. Garry and say a fond farewell to Ms. Kinnarney and Ms. Watson.
I also wish to thank the current and the outgoing Board of Management for the work they do on behalf of the school and the support they give me as principal.
I wish you all a safe and happy holiday.
Kind Regards
Mrs C Hyland

Book Returns and Collections-Thursday 18th of June
Dear Parents/Guardians
On the evening of Thursday 18th of June the class teachers will be returning any belongings, books and copies belonging to the children and they will be collecting any books from the school book scheme. It is essential that the school books are returned on Thursday as we want to avoid unnecessary interaction at the start of the new term. If you are unable to attend please arrange with another parent to return books and collect belongings on your behalf.
The teachers will set up just inside the school gate. There will be two time slots from 5-6pm for Juniors to 2nd Class and from 6-7pm for 3rd to 6th Class.
We ask that only parents attend and that the social distancing guidelines are carefully observed.
Kind Regards,
Ms Fullam
Offaly Libraries Summer Activities
Hello!
Offaly Libraries is delighted to announce our Summer Stars programme for 2020. This Right to Read National Summer Reading Programme for children runs from the 15th of June until the end of August. We would appreciate it if you could share these details with your students, and keep them reading over the summer! This year, the programme will be delivered mostly online with lots of fun activities planned for Summer Stars 2020, including the following:
Activities for Summer Stars 2020:
- Summer Stars BorrowBox: Browse, borrow, read and listen to the Summer Stars collection of children’s eBooks and eAudiobooks through the library’s BorrowBox app. This is free for all members to use from anywhere, anytime: https://www.offaly.ie/eng/Services/Libraries/Digital-Library/eBooks-eAudiobooks/eBooks-eAudiobooks.html
- Online Storytime: Summer Stars story times will be delivered online by library staff and Irish authors including chapter readings from books, available through Offaly Libraries’ Social Media pages.
- Story Competition: As well as enjoying the amazing worlds of books, Summer Stars is also celebrating children’s imaginations by running a short story competition, An Unexpected Adventure. There are three age categories from 6-18 with great prizes for all the winners and runners-up: https://www.librariesireland.ie/services/right-to-read/summer-stars/story-competition-an-unexpected-adventure
- Books: As Offaly libraries continue to expand the services being provided on a phased basis over the coming months, we will provide Summer Stars book-lending services to children where possible. Keep an eye on our website and Social Media pages for updates. Currently, Tullamore, Birr, Edenderry and Clara libraries are open for the Contact and Collect service: https://www.offaly.ie/eng/Services/Libraries/Libraries/Contact-and-Collect-Service.html
- Reading cards and reviews: Children can track their reading progress with reading cards which can be marked each time a book is read, online or in print form. Reading cards will be available from your local library branches – just call ahead to arrange a pick-up time from accessible libraries. A reviews section on www.summerstars.ie allows readers to upload their views on what they have read.
- Online Quizzes: Offaly Libraries will provide Summer Stars online quizzes and scavenger hunts over the period, details will be posted on Social Media.

Water Safety Ireland's PAWS (Primary Aquatics Water Safety) programme outlines the essential life-saving guidelines that every child needs to know. Learn skills that can save lives. PAWS delivers invaluable lessons that are simple common sense. Every parent is more than qualified to guide their children through them, all lessons have been adapted to facilitate home learning.
We are encouraging all primary schools to assign the PAWS programme to their students over the coming weeks. We predict that this summer will see a surge in the national usage of beaches, rivers, lakes etc. as a result of people not being able to travel. We would view primary school pupils as an at-risk drowning group. Given the disruption of COVID-19 to our education programmes, and the likely increase in usage of waterways, we feel it is essential to bolster our efforts to promote water safety.
RTÉ Home School Hub
PAWS is now on the RTE Home School Hub available by clicking the link below:
https://www.rte.ie/learn/2020/0513/1138157-learn-skills-that-save-lives-by-becoming-a-paws-hero/
The lessons and activities will guide children through Water Safety at home, on farms, in swimming pools, rivers, lakes and of course at the beach. Splash the Bear and River the Otter will show children how to stay safe at these locations, and how keep their family and friends safe too! By taking part not only will children be safer on or near the water, they can also become a PAWS HERO! All resources can also be found by visiting www.teachpaws.ie

Paula will guide you and your children through how to set up a relaxing space that your child can engage with every day, along with how to create a thoughts and feelings box which can be useful for checking in with those emotions and thoughts that may be difficult to express right now. She will also guide you and your family through a soothing meditation designed for children but that adults will definitely benefit from too!

SNA Online Zoom Breathing Space
We welcome you to the SNA Online Zoom Breathing Space for some time away from the stresses and pressures of the times we find ourselves in. Come away for an hour into a space of rest and relaxation. All you will need is a soft relaxing space (this may just be a cushion and blanket), a candle to light together (feel free to add more candles if you wish to your space), and if you want to light some incense or oil too. Have a pen and paper ready for our gratitude and check in practices. There will be soft music playing but you might prefer to have your own music on as well in the background. We invite you to create a space where you feel cosy and can relax in. This space is for you to restore and renew your energy and engage in guided self-care practice. Never before have we needed these breathing spaces as much.

Suicide Prevention Skills Online
START has been developed by Living Works, the same company who developed the SafeTALK and ASIST programmes. It is targeted at anyone over the age of 18 who wants to help prevent suicide and develop the skills to help someone who may be at risk of suicide. The aim of the programme is to help participants to identify people who are at risk of suicide, to confidently ask them about the topic of suicide and to connect them with resources that can help them stay safe (see information leaflet attached). It can be completed in 1.5 hours and includes a four-step model to keep someone safe from suicide and impactful simulations which are undertaken and put into practice during the programme.
It is a Level 2 alertness skills programme. Whilst not as advanced as safeTALK or the two-day intervention skills workshop ASIST, it does, however, provide the opportunity for participants to:
- Become more comfortable talking about suicide
- Feel more confident in keeping a person safe in times of distress
- Be able to support members of the community, friends and co-workers
- Build personal professional skills
- Have peace of mind knowing the readiness to help is obtained
- Gain awareness of the supports and services that are available.
A licence is required by each individual to undertake the Start programme. Licences are limited and there is also a cost for each Licence therefore it is imperative that anyone who applies for a Licence is committed to completing the programme. This Licence can obtained by making contact with me by email ([email protected]). All relevant information re accessing the programme and the accompanying information re local and national supports and services will then be forwarded.

€2,000 Prize Fund announced for Offaly’s Longest Day Project to promote Health and Physical Activity in June
Last week, Healthy Offaly in conjunction with Offaly Sports Partnership launched “Offaly’s Longest Day” project to promote health and physical activity in June and a €2,000 prize fund to coincide with the project.
The Longest Day Project was created by Offaly Sports Partnership and Healthy Offaly, and is supported by Offaly Local Community Development Committee. The idea behind the project is based on famous wartime movies about the longest day representing a major turning point and a fight back, a refusal to lie down and accept defeat against the odds.
In particular, primary and secondary school pupils / students are encouraged to take part in the longest day project and have a chance to share in the prize fund. Pupils / Students / Parents can contact Offaly Sports Partnership from now to the end of May to express an interest in undertaking a 19-day physical activity challenge in the run up to the longest day on June 20th. Everyone expressing an interest will be sent an entry form to set out what they plan to do and a daily physical activity diary to record their activity. Entry forms should be returned to the Sports Partnership by June 6th and the daily diary by June 26th. Independent judges from across the network of local sports partnerships will adjudicate 19 different categories and draw a shortlist of 5 to 10 in each depending on the volume of entries received. There will be a draw for each category from the people shortlisted with one person or household winning a cash voucher in each.
There will be 18 individual vouchers of €100: -
· male and female in preschool and infants;
· male and female in 1st to 3rd class primary;
· male and female in 4th to 6th class primary;
· male and female in junior cert cycle secondary;
· male and female in senior cycle secondary;
· male and female in 18 to 34 years;
· male and female in 35 to 49 years;
· male and female in 50 to 64 years; and
· male and female in 65 years and older.
There will also be a €200 voucher for an entire household category.
Eamonn Henry, Coordinator of Offaly Sports Partnership encouraged parents / pupils / students / teachers to consider the Department of Health’s recommended levels of physical activity when setting challenges for themselves and family members. Children and young people need to be active for at least 60 minutes a day while adults need at least 30 minutes a day, five times each week.
In addition to the 19-day challenge, organisers also announced a Longest Day photographic competition to show Offaly people staying active while maintaining social distancing on June 20th. Details of prizes and the entry process will be announced in June.
Anyone wishing to take part in the longest day challenge can request an entry form and activity diary by emailing [email protected] or call Eamonn Henry on 086 – 7948054. Please include name and postal address when requesting a form and diary.

Stress Control Sessions Online with HSE
Stress Control online
Stress is a normal reaction to the rapidly changing and uncertain times we are all living in at the moment. If you are feeling a bit more stressed than usual and would like to learn some great ways, free-of-charge, to deal with common problems like anxiety, depression, panicky feelings, poor sleep and poor wellbeing then come along to our classes.
‘Stress Control’ is a six-session cognitive-behavioural therapy class used extensively in community-settings by the NHS (UK) and HSE (Ireland) and across the world. You can find out more here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjUJQqRfZgE
As you can’t come to a regular Stress Control class due to the current circumstances, Stress Control will come to you by live streaming two sessions a week on YouTube. Each session will repeat four times starting on Monday 11th May - for dates and times please see the dates timetable on the website. The sessions will be led by Dr Jim White, consultant clinical psychologist, who created the class and who has taught most of the NHS (UK) and HSE (Ireland) trainers who would normally be running classes in their communities. Stress Control on-line already ran over 3 weeks in April and an average audience of 6,000 attended each session. Stress is a very common problem.
To take part:
- Go to www.stresscontrol.org where you can learn more about the class and get the dates. Everything you need to successfully complete the class – the booklets, self-assessment, relaxation and mindfulness tracks - can be found in the ‘Free zone’ (scroll down on the home page to find). If you can, please read, and start working on, the ‘Preparing for the course’ booklets before Session 1. These can be found in the ‘Booklets’ section of the ‘Free zone’
- Click on the ‘Stress Control 2020’ link on the homepage to access our YouTube channel where the classes will be available to view at the scheduled times. If you click the ‘Subscribe’ button on our YouTube page (free), you will receive notifications when a new session is available. To watch our trailer, please follow this link: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_BKErJ_jlSQHKFtHPCRmEctDtcNCCowB
- You do not need to register or login – please just follow the above link
- The session will begin exactly on time, so make sure you are there from the start. Sessions run for about 90 minutes and there will be a 10-minute break in the middle. Due to copyright restrictions, sessions will only live stream so they will not remain on YouTube.
- Each session is one piece of the jigsaw in tackling your stress. By coming to each class, the jigsaw will form, the big picture can emerge, and you will learn how to handle your stress better. This is cognitive-behavioural therapy so it is crucial you practice the skills you will learn between sessions.

First Holy Communion and Confirmation:
Please see below message from Bishop Denis regarding First Holy Communion and Confirmation:
First Holy Communion & Confirmation: I am very aware that we are entering the ‘high season’ for First Holy Communion ceremonies. I am also conscious that 39 out of our 56 parishes have not yet celebrated Confirmation. In honesty it is difficult to see a huge change post the current restrictions, which expire on May 5th. With that in mind, as First Holy Communion ceremonies are already diaried for the weekends of May, I suggest they, like Confirmation ceremonies are now postponed until we get further guidance regarding large public gatherings.
I want to thank our Principals and teachers for the great work they do in helping prepare our young people for the sacraments, work done in cooperation with the local parish and the families of the young people. I also thank Maeve Mahon, our Coordinator for Primary Education. This is a hugely regretful decision, but it is important that while the ceremonies may be postponed, the preparation continues. In early May resources will be sent out by email from Maeve for parishes and for schools and available to families and the wider community on the KandLe website https://www.kandle.ie/

Mental Health Awareness Day
- We will be holding a Mental Health Awareness Day on Tuesday 25th of February as part of our Amber Flag initiative.
- Mental Health problems affect about 1 in 10 children and young people. They include depression, anxiety and conduct disorder, and are often a direct response to what they are experiencing in their lives.
- 1 in 5 primary school children in Ireland experience general anxiety and 1 in 4 experience low mood.
- Nowadays, children's mental health is never far from the headlines as parents are attempting to understand their children's mental health.
- Good mental health allows children and young people to develop the resilience to cope with whatever life throws at them and supports and allows them to grow into well-rounded and healthy adults.
- Two speakers from St. Patrick's Mental Health Services, Shane Kirwan (Nurse Practice Development Co-ordinator) and Colin Folan (Clinical Nurse Manager 11 Child and Adolescent Unit) will be at the school on this day to talk to parents and relatives at 11:30 about mental health awareness.
- All parents, grandparents and relatives are very welcome to attend. Your support and attendance at the talk would be very much appreciated as both Shane and Colin are giving up their time voluntarily.

- The children will be taking part in their own Mental Health Awareness programme on the day. They will start with a Friendship Breakfast and then will take part in a series of mental health awareness talks and mindfulness exercises.
- The children have been doing a lot already to improve their mental health in school, by taking part in meditation, yoga classes, mindfulness and classroom to 2K challenge. Each classroom also has a 'Worry Box' or 'Worry Monster' if they need to write down or share any personal concerns.
